Angie Homez-Jara

Thesis: A system within a system: unscrambling the underlying phenomena within food spoilage.

Research Interests and Future Goals: Angie Homez-Jara is a Ph.D. student in the Food Science Program at the University of Guelph under the supervision of Dr. Maria G. Corradini. Angie’s dissertation will focus on exploring the challenges and opportunities to monitor and predict spoilage in mushrooms by factoring in heterogeneity in both the product and handling/mishandling practices. Angie has used analytical techniques (vibrational, spectroscopic, thermal, compositional) to understand and signal spoilage in complex matrices such as fruits, fish, and films. Angie is versed in mathematical modelling (artificial neural networks) techniques to deconvolute and disentangle information contained in dense datasets (hyperspectral images) to non-destructively estimate quality attributes. Angie has published five research papers in high-impact journals and has participated in various scientific conferences. She has also been awarded the Keith and June Laver Scholarship in Horticulture, Robert Orr Lawson, Arthur Latornell, and SMART Training Scholarships. Angie believes that gaining a deep understanding of spoilage is key to developing techniques that help reduce food waste.
