Trainee Series 2026

We’re excited to showcase the work of three SMART trainees, who presented their research that aligned with the SMART Training Platform’s focus on implementation science and building healthier cities. The presenters come from diverse academic backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to complex challenges in health, sustainability, and equity.

MEET THE TRAINEES

Vivian Yin, University of Toronto

Co-designing a virtual nutrition education program and community gardening intervention to reduce type 2 diabetes risk

VIVIAN is a PhD candidate in Nutritional Sciences at the University of Toronto. Her research investigates evidence-based approaches to improve nutrition education and behaviour change for type 2 diabetes prevention in at-risk populations, particularly the ethnically diverse population of the Peel Region of Ontario. 

Dr. Sarah Packull McCormick, University of Guelph

Pet ownership as an intervention to support health aging and aging in place, with implications for the development of healthy, age-friendly cities

DR. SARA PACKULL- McCORMICK is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Population Medicine, Ontario Veterinary College, University of Guelph. Her research focuses on the connections between human, animal, and environmental health including a focus on companion animals and healthy aging.

Brianna Leadbetter, University of New Brunswick

Optimizing the Integration of Clinical Exercise Physiologists in Canadian Collaborative Health Teams

BRIANNA is a first-year PhD student in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. She is certified as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and completed her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Kinesiology.
